Shichiseikai Buddhist monks from Japan

From Kyoto, the former Imperial city of Japan, Shichiseikai is a group of Buddhist monks who perform the ceremonies, rituals and shomy (Buddhist sutra chanting) of the Jodo sect of Buddhism. Shichiseikai's voices resonate in unison creating a rich variety of harmonic overtones. While carrying on the tradition of shomyo, the group has also created a new form of music through the application of shomyo's unique notions of the male voice and chorus which they perform with bansurai (bamboo flute) accompaniment. This highly spiritual performance has played to capacity audiences on previous visits to the UK.
